Esops in Environment
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
Our Employee Social Options (Esops) program supports employees in creating volunteering projects based on the needs of underprivileged communities in and around their place of work. Employees generate ideas for projects, prepare annual activity plans, implement each activity, and monitor results. To fund these employee initiatives, each sector targets to donate 0.5 percent of its profit after tax to the central CSR fund and 0.5 percent to Esops.
Environmental initiatives make a difference both to the planet and to our everyday lives. When we clean up garbage and pollution and plant trees, we help heal degraded areas—and raise our own living standards. Each year, Esops organizes cleanliness drives to clean up buildings or entire villages. In 2010, 75 volunteers from Mahindra Steel Service Centre Ltd and Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd organized a trash pickup day to make Kanhe a completely garbage-free village. Mahindra World City Developers Ltd organized a comprehensive two-day cleanliness drive at the Government Hospital at Chengalpet, Chennai.
Our biggest environmental initiative yet is Mahindra Hariyali. In 2007, we set ourselves the ambitious goal of planting 1 million trees nationwide to increase India’s green cover and offset national greenhouse gas emissions. In FY 2012-13, the Mahindra Hariyali project surpassed our goal by over 500,000 trees. Hariyali brought together Mahindra employees across all sectors and regions. Every Mahindra location, be it a factory, corporate office, or even a dealership, organized tree planting days in partnership with local stakeholders including schools, colleges, trusts, and government forest departments.
Esops in environmental issues draws teams together to accomplish something big, creating a feeling of responsibility and empowerment to lead our employees and local partners alike to take ownership of India’s future and get involved in sustainability.
