    Green Facilities

As part of our long-term sustainability plan, all our facilities are following comprehensive plans to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize emissions.  At Mahindra, we believe our responsibility to our stakeholders extends beyond providing satisfying products and services to the integrity of our production processes.  In 2009, our Farm Equipment plant in Nagpur won the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) National Award for Excellence in Water Management and our Automotive plant in Nasik received second prize in the state-level award for Excellence in Energy Management.  All our Automotive, Farm Equipment, and Components plants are either already ISO 14001:2004 certified or in the process of obtaining certification.

Our Facilities

Chakan Automotive Plant

Chakan Automotive Plant

Our integrated automotive manufacturing plant in Chakan, Western India is a state-of-the-art green facility designed to capture both immediate and incremental environmental benefits.  With an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, Chakan can produce multiple vehicle platforms from press to body to paint to General Assembly, realizing efficiencies in cutting out transportation costs and reducing production time.  We’ve installed 70 solar dishes to capture solar energy to supply electricity, and our hydro-pneumatic pumping system and compressed air system dryers help us reduce power consumption. A zero discharge facility, waste water is recycled on-site and our chiller and closed loop cooling towers reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.  We are proud to operate one of the greenest automotive plants in the world and raise the bar for clean manufacturing.

Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Facility

Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Facility

Mahindra Reva is building a completely green facility in Bangalore to fulfill its "Born Green" operating philosophy—to create cars with the lowest possible dust to dirt carbon footprint. Nearly complete, our facility was built using green-sourced materials and green methods following the standards of the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). It consists of a production facility, test track, administrative office block, conference area, and technology demonstration area and has an annual capacity of 30,000 cars.  We designed a rooftop solar power plant to provide energy for industrial use, street lighting, and charging facilities for vehicle testing.  An efficient rain water harvesting system provides water, and soil conservation strategies prevent erosion and chemical alteration of the soil due to landscaping.  Finally, we optimized natural ventilation and lighting to keep our electricity consumption low.  For example, a translucent honeycomb mesh covers the eastern side of the building to block out heat from the morning sun and minimize the need for fans and air conditioning.

Automotive Plant, Zaheerabad

Automotive Plant, Zaheerabad

Our automotive plant in semi-arid Zaheerabad developed an innovative solution when a drought dried up our groundwater sources in 2000.  We turned to creative water management systems including the recycling and reuse of water through an on-site biofiltration plant, effluent treatment plant, and drip irrigation system.  Over time, our recharging efforts helped the groundwater table rise by 220 feet.  Our twin strategy of rainwater harvesting and tree planting has enhanced local biodiversity and made our plant carbon-neutral, transforming the local landscape.  In 2009, we won the Excellent Water Management Unit Award at the National Award for Excellence in Water Management event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).  Our 90-acre grounds have also been recognized by the Bird Watchers Society of India as a must-go location.
