Deepak joined the Board in 1990. 

 

He began his career with Ernst & Young Management Consultancy Services in New York City.  After three years each with Grindlays Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank, Deepak joined HDFC in 1978 and worked his way to the Executive Chairmanship of HDFC.  He also serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC), Lafarge India and Siemens India.

 

Deepak holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (England and Wales).

 

An indispensable voice on many Government decisions about economic and financial policy, Deepak has served on a long list of Government-appointed Advisory Committees and task forces.  A few of his current responsibilities include a committee to explore the feasibility of a proposed India infrastructure debt fund; a committee to suggest ways of making Indian cities slum-free; an Expert Group for recommending investment norms for New Pension Scheme (NPS) launched by the Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority; and a task force on affordable Housing.

 

In the past, Deepak has contributed counsel on attracting foreign investment, housing finance institutions, forward trading, attracting regional investments in key projects, taxation of life insurance groups, securities market regulation, bank restructuring, power sector reforms, civil aviation, and consumer interests.         

 

Deepak’s extraordinary contributions to Indian economic policy and related fields have garnered several prestigious awards. To name only a few, Deepak was the first recipient of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ Outstanding Achievement Award in 2010.  In 2008, Business Week named him as one of the ‘Stars of Asia,’ AsiaMoney listed him among the top 25 most influential people in business and finance, and Finance Asia gave him the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the financial sector.  In 2006, he was chosen Best Non-Executive Director by the Asian Centre for Corporate Governance in recognition of his leadership on the board of several large companies.  The President of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 2006 for distinguished service to his country in his field.
