The 8th Annual Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards Announced

Recognizes & honors the finest in Indian Theatre


New Delhi, 9 March 2013: The 8th Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) were announced at a red carpet awards ceremony in the capital today. The META 2013 six member jury consisting Nissar Allana, Shobha Deepak Singh,  Anmol Vellani, Renu Roy, Bhanu Bharti and Pawan Maskara judged the nominated productions to be honored with India’s most prestigious national honor for theatre.

 

After enthralling theatre audiences during the six day Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Festival showcasing 10 of the nation’s best theatre productions, the spotlight has turned to the winners across META’s 13 categories. Gasha made waves being awarded the Best Play along with Best Ensemble and Best Original Script while Satyabrata Rout was adjudged the Best Director for Matte Ekalavya whose lead Dingri Naresh won the award for Best Actor. Valeria Olgoin from Sadhna Centre for Creative Practice won the Best Actor (Female) for a stunning performance in After the Silence. Both Matte Eklavya and After The Silence won four  awards each at the ceremony. Other plays to win awards included Mirugavidushagam, So Many Socks and The Old Man and the Sea. Renowned theatre personality Ebrahim Alkazi was honoured with the META Lifetime Achievement Award for his illustrious contributions to the field.

Attended by luminaries and leading names from the country’s performing arts and theatre scene, the META awards ceremony is a unique red carpet event in theatre. The awards are given away after a weeklong showcase of nominated plays at the Mahindra Theatre Festival.

 

 

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Dubey, Creative Director for META said, “All the plays nominated for the awards this year have been stellar in their own right and have already won the hearts of the audiences during their performance at the festival.
