Mahindra World City & Mahindra EPC commissions 75 KW Rooftop Solar Plant in Tamil Nadu

March 9, 2012, Chennai: Mahindra World City Developers Ltd (MWC) & Mahindra EPC Services – Off-grid Division, today announced the successful commissioning of the 75 KW Rooftop solar plant at Mahindra World City, Chennai. Mahindra World City has been a pioneer in commissioning the Off-grid solar power plant in the state of Tamil Nadu. The system is installed over an area of 800 sqm. on the rooftop of The Canopy, the Commercial Complex  in Mahindra World City. The solar system is expected to generate approximately 1,16,000 units (kWh)  of clean electrical energy annually which will result in significant savings in the electricity bills and the diesel consumption. The system is expected to offset emissions of nearly 60 tons of carbon dioxide per year by decreasing diesel usage at the site. This solar system is equipped with a remote monitoring system.

Presiding over the inauguration ceremony in Chennai, Ms. Anita Arjundas, MD, Mahindra Lifespace Developers said “The guidance and the support provided by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Tamil Nadu Energy Development Authority (TEDA) have enabled us in this maiden endeavor”.

This plant is a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) policy for Off-grid systems.

Speaking on the occasion Ms. Sangeeta Prasad, CEO, Mahindra World City Developers said “Our pursuits in sustainable practices through energy efficient lighting systems, waste treatment processes, water conservation and water body resurgence methods will continue”.

“We plan to play a larger role in Off-Grid systems and bridge the last mile gap in the country” said Mr. Vish Palekar, Business Head, Cleantech Ventures, Mahindra Partners. He adds “Along with rooftops, we are also working closely to solarize telecom towers and power IT centers”. 

The Engineering, Procurement and Construction arm of Mahindra Solar - Mahindra EPC – OffGrid Division has commissioned this 75 KW solar power project utilizing its proven expertise in design, engineering & construction.

MWCDL recently signed up Duet Hotels to bring in a Holiday Inn Express that will be  set up as a 4-star business hotel and is expected to be operational by Sep 2013.

 

The next phase of development will include malls, multiplexes, a hospital, clubs with sports facilities, accommodation for single working professionals etc.

 

Mahindra World City, as part of its approach to holistic development has involved itself, with the support of NGOs, in skill up-gradation and employability training, training over 1500 village youth.
