Mahindra Group launches 8th Annual Sustainability Report under the theme ‘BusinessWise’

September 7, 2015, Mumbai: The Mahindra Group today launched the 8th edition of its annual Sustainability Report which details the Group’s efforts at becoming more environment conscious. These initiatives are driven by the Group’s Rise philosophy and its three pillars of Accepting No Limits, Alternative Thinking and Driving Positive Change.

Launching the report, Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said “The theme of this year’s sustainability report- BusinessWise- highlights the fact that Sustainability is an integral part of the Mahindra Group’s business plans and operations. We are sharpening our approach to Sustainability and this report puts us on the path toward the globally respected GRI G4 guidelines for reporting on Sustainability.”

All Mahindra Group companies are making efforts to streamline and customize the concept of sustainability for themselves, based on an understanding of key material issues that impact their businesses. This includes structured stakeholder engagements at multiple levels. The roadmaps that emerge from these initiatives are charting the Group on a course toward excellence in eco-efficiency.

During 2014-15, the Group achieved significant milestones on its Sustainability journey including becoming Water Positive. Recognizing that India is on the path to becoming a water stressed country in the near future, Mahindra’s micro-irrigation business played a key role in making the Group water positive. While Mahindra consumed 6.1 million cubic metres of water last year, the micro-irrigation systems installed Gujarat alone saved 8.4 million cubic metres of water.

Diverse initiatives were also undertaken across all sectors to achieve a cumulative energy saving of 102,990 GJ. Biodiversity assessments were conducted across the Group’s manufacturing and real estate sectors. In addition, all Mahindra Group companies are now moving towards the use of renewable power in their operations. One stand out is Mahindra Two Wheelers, which sources 20% of its power requirement from solar energy at its Pithampur manufacturing plant. .

On the Corporate Social Responsibility front, Mahindra has increased its investment by a massive 95% during 2014-15 over the previous year. This speaks to the Group’s commitment to give back to society and in particular to the communities in which it operates.
