Mahindra's Intertrade division was the pioneer in setting up India’s first Steel Service Centre in 1993, ‘Mahindra Steel Service Centre’ at Kanhe, Near Pune together with its Japanese partners, Mitsubishi Corporation and Nissho Iwai Corporation (now Metal One Corporation).

The Intertrade Division of the Group was incorporated as an independent company, Mahindra Intertrade, in 1999.

Steel and steel related services, including service centre facilities, constitute a major 
part of the Company's portfolio of offerings. These include steel raw materials, metals, ferro, alloys, scrap, technical and applications-oriented products (rubber and tyre instruments and machinery, NDT instruments and systems, Analytical and Diagnostic systems, compressors for special applications, etc.) and even consumer products such as toys and apparel.

The steel trading business and the partnership with Japanese trading houses were the first business activities of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. after its incorporation in 1945. In 1996-97, Intertrade was the first company to set up an Electrical Steel Service Centre at Kanhe for Home Appliance & Transformer industries. In 2003, the Electrical Service Centre diversified in laminations for the transformer industry with a state-of-the-art line, which revolutionised this industry in India with the introduction of Step-Lap technology. In February 2005, M&M, as a part ot its global vision expanded its Electrical Steel Service network to the Middle East region with a facility at Sharjah.

In 2007, MIL inaugurated a state –of-the-art Blanking Line facility in Nashik backed by German technology. The plant marks a first, both for M&M and the automotive industry in India. Mahindra Intertrade’s blanking line will be the first and only independent automotive facility for blanked skin panels in India. MIL’s high precision blanking line will process steel coils for supply of automotive body profiles and rectangular and trapezoidal sheets required for press shop operations. It will also look at export of profiles to S.E Asia.
