The fourth edition of the Mahindra Kabira Festival relived the profound, yet simple teachings of the great mystic poet-saint Kabir through a glittering extravaganza of music, literature, and arts
The annual Mahindra Kabira Festival held in Varanasi is a premier event in Mahindra Group’s cultural calendar. Varanasi’s ghats, spiritual and ancient, present the perfect setting for experiencing the magic of Kabir.
Held from November 22-24, the festival covered three days of music and celebration as guests immersed themselves in the teachings of Kabir, against the enchanting backdrop of Varanasi’s ghats.
Celebrated musicians lent their voice to Kabir’s verse, giving a contemporary yet spiritual feel to his teaching. Meghwal singer Mooralala Marwada’s distinct voice and folk music swirled together with Kabir Café’s livewire rock fusion to form a heady mix. Acclaimed vocalists Ujwal Nagar, Om Prakash Nayak and Shabnam Virmani, cast a spell with their lilting renditions of Hindustani classical, folk and Sufi melodies.
Renowned exponents of classical music weaved magic with their mellow sounds. Three-time Grammy nominee Pt Ajay Shankar Prasanna, acclaimed sitar player Neeraj Mishra, flautist Rakesh Kumar, and sarangi maestro Ustad Kamal Sabri mesmerised the audiences with their soulful strains. Jashn-e-Qalam, a Mumbai-based collective, embellished the musical journey by reciting folk tales.
This year, Kabira partnered with Unity Earth, an international organisation on a mission to accelerate the realisation of unity and peace on earth, which led to jam sessions with world-class reggae practitioners such as Grammy-nominated singer Pato Banton, keyboardist Antoinette 'Rootsdawtah' Hall and Kristin Hoffmann.
Apart from soul-touching music, guests participated in Heritage Walks through Varanasi’s lanes and were engrossed in the literary discourse presented by acclaimed author Purushottam Agrawal.
The Kabira fest had even the Twitterverse raving about the festival!
