Embrace The Dark with ‘Perak’

The newest Classic Legends model - the Jawa Perak - has undoubtedly been the most anticipated motorcycle of 2020. A classic motorcycle that brings back the past, yet is far ahead of its time, the BSVI-compliant machine is India’s first custom-made bobber motorcycle.

“When we set out to build the Perak, the goal was simple – to create a motorcycle with the right blend of exclusivity, individuality and performance, with a hint of the sinister and dark,” says Anupam Thareja, co-founder, Classic Legends Ltd.

Powered by a 334cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder, four stroke, DOHC cross-port engine delivering 30.64 bhp of power and a higher 32.74 Nm of torque, the Jawa Perak, with its bobbed fenders, signature chopped twin exhaust and a floating seat embodies the spirit of a creature of the night – a stealthy, dark, vigilante. The Perak is priced at Rs. 1,94,000 ex-showroom.

“The Perak product team spent their lockdown time fruitfully, meticulously fine tuning the engine to crank up the torque by nearly 2 Nm from its earlier 31 Nm. This allows for better pulling performance from both standstill and during rolling acceleration. Coupled with the new cross-port engine technology, the machine delivers a thrilling performance but remains compliant with BSVI regulations. The six-speed transmission puts the power on the tarmac where it belongs, its ratios optimized to offer a great riding experience through the gears,” Mr Thareja added.

The motorcycle has a completely reworked chassis with an all-new swingarm and is engineered to offer the optimum transverse, longitudinal, and torsional rigidity. The frame and swingarm stiffness have been fine tuned to offer a linear feel, aiding stability over straight tracks and poise along winding roads. This plays a significant role in improving the handling. “We’re proud of our creation,” says Mr. Thareja.

Perak’s digital marketing campaign reached 12 million people with 1.8 million individuals engaging with it. Deliveries began mid-July across India and the beast is available for test rides and bookings at all Jawa dealerships across India.

In the wake of the Corona pandemic, a comprehensive standard operating procedure has been put in place across all sales outlets, and dealerships to ensure the safety of employees, customers and visitors. Each showroom comprises trained teams that are equipped to follow social distancing norms, and hygiene & sanitation protocols, for a worry-free purchase experience.


Driving Towards A W-Shaped Recovery

The automotive industry has seen a sharp recovery in June this year, driven by pent-up demand for vehicles and a relatively buffered rural economy, after near zero sales in April. Even as uncertainties around the potential recovery pathways remain, the agricultural sector has been relatively less impacted and is expected to drive the Indian recovery.

Record rabi crop production, higher government procurement prices for crops, the announcement of higher Minimum Support Prices leading to better realisation for the farmers, and the outlook of a normal monsoon has aided the consumer sentiments.

A quicker recovery in rural demand which will improve sales momentum for the automotive and the farm sectors is expected, while urban markets will take a little longer to regain normalcy in demand. The positive performance of the tractor industry in June can be seen as a barometer of rural sentiments.

With the rural economy remaining the silver lining, a sharper demand recovery in predominantly rural states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, among others, especially for pickups and utility vehicles is expected.

It is also forecast that the recovery rate will be moderate in July and August, before seeing a further sales spike in September and October during the festive season; moving more like a W-shaped recovery curve in the next few months.

On the commercial vehicles side, the share of the 2 to 3.5 tons segment (pickups) is expected to increase to 72% of the sub-3.5 tons segment during May-June. The agricultural sector contributes to almost 45% of the demand for pickups.

With demand for agricultural commodities, raw materials and intermediate goods expected to remain positive in the near future, it is expected to provide growth momentum for freight demand and potential new vehicle sales.

With the cost of finance coming down by about 72bps (0.72%) since March 2020, it is expected to provide relief to customers in both rural and urban markets, especially first-time buyers. Some downside risks to demand remain due to localised lockdowns in different states and districts.

Delivering Quarantine Care

Nightingales, a pioneer in home healthcare in India since 1996, and a leader in home healthcare services, has just launched specially-designed Covid-19 Home Quarantine Care packages for patients who have been advised to quarantine at home during their recovery phase.

The 15-day packages are based on the clinical care guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and designed to provide holistic clinical care for patients. For instance, ‘Nightingales Advantage’, priced at Rs3,999 or just Rs. 267 a day, includes 5 online consultations with a physician, and twice daily online consultations with an experience nurse, over the course of 15 days. Additionally, an online consultation each with a nutritionist, psychologist and physiotherapist is included to help patients during their recovery period.

Detailed guidelines for patient and family safety, and end-of-quarantine support are a part of the package. ‘Nightingales Advantage Plus’, costing Rs7,995 (or Rs. 533 per day) includes everything in the ‘Advantage’ plan but adds monitoring devices and a medicines kit.

‘Nightingales Advantage Plus+’ is priced at Rs11,999 or Rs. 800 per day, and includes safety supplies in addition to what’s available in the Advantage Plus plan.
