Green Living-Now At Your Fingertips

Sustainability has always been one of the core values of the Mahindra Group, and there has been a conscious attempt to embed it into each of our businesses over the years. Now it’s your turn! Mahindra has developed a new Sustainability App that will help you live a greener life and lower your carbon footprint. The App will be launched tomorrow, June 5 -World Environment Day, by Mr. S P Shukla, Group President- Aerospace, Defence, Agri and Steel, and Chairman of the Group Sustainability Council, via a livestream event open to all employees.

Available on both iOS and Android platforms, the app is meant for Mahindra employees only, and offers six main features:

  • Links to 100+ articles from industry stalwarts on a wide variety of subjects
  • All upcoming internal and external events on various subjects related to Sustainability
  • Live tweets related to sustainability from 100+ professionals, institutes, think tanks, etc.,
  • Projects and best practices in the areas of water, waste, energy efficiency, etc., to give you an idea of what is being done, and what is yet to be done in your businesses/ locations
  • Contact details of over 50 vendors who have implemented sustainability projects in our businesses
  • Stories of Mahindra employees who have taken up environmental initiatives at a personal or community level.

Users can also upload their own personal triumphs, or the stories of others within the Mahindra Group.

Group Sustainability also organized an ‘Awareness Week’ from June 1st-5th leading up to World Environment Day. The events, which included suggesting an environment-friendly task to employees to perform each day, were organized with the support of the Sustainability Champions, the CSR team and the Group Communications.

Employees were urged to perform the task given, take a photograph to document it and post it on social media, tagging another Mahindra employee to take up the challenge. The challenge is aimed at creating a chain of awareness and helping to propel individual actions towards supporting the environment. The Sustainability App is one more weapon in the Mahindra Group’s arsenal to help Group businesses and colleagues support environment-friendly initiatives that will aid in addressing climate change issues.

Building Immunity by Building Communities

Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world, the Mahindra Group has increased its efforts to combat the spread of the virus and extend a helping hand to the communities affected by it. A responsible corporate citizen, the Mahindra Group’s efforts cover a wide spectrum – from raising funds to sustain the government’s relief efforts, to providing monetary support and dry rations for the underprivileged, to re-engineering its production lines and facilities to manufacture much need PPE and other equipment to aid the fight against Coronavirus.

The Mahindra Group has donated Rs. 50 crores to the 'Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in emergency situations fund'.  The Mahindra & Mahindra Workers Union has donated Rs. 50 lakhs to Maharashtra CM's Relief Fund. Swaraj Engines has donated Rs. 3 lakhs to Deputy Commissioner Office, Mohali. Mahindra World City Chennai, has donated Rs. 3 Lakhs for Thiruvallur District Collectorate. Swaraj Tractors has donated Rs. 2.5 lakhs to Deputy Commissioner Office, Mohali.

The Group also set up a COVID-19 relief fund under the Mahindra Foundation to support related initiatives. Mahindra employees have raised close to Rs. 7.5 crores through voluntary contributions (as on May 31, 2020). An additional amount of Rs. 23.5 lakh has been committed by Tech Mahindra employees and associates to support the COVID-19 related initiatives.

Mahindra’s efforts to provide ‘in kind’ or material support have proved critical in the fight against the pandemic. Our Auto and Farm Sector (AFS) has produced and distributed over 3,00,000 face shields, over 5,00,000, 3-ply face masks and over 450 Aerosol boxes.

Additionally, the team has also been working on developing a basic Ambu bag (named AIR100) and ICU ventilators. Mahindra Summit Agriscience is currently producing and supplying 34,000 litres of disinfectant and sanitizers.

Mahindra Holidays has offered its resorts as Temporary Care Facilities, while Mahindra Logistics has launched HOPE (Helping Our People during Emergencies), an initiative to support truck drivers financially, in their battle against the COVID-19 related lockdown.

That’s not all, Tech Mahindra has led the digital fight, creating tools to strategically tackle some of the issues faced during the pandemic. It has successfully implemented various digital initiatives including:

  • The development and deployment of a Blockchain based e-Pass solution for State Governments to streamline validation and enable the mobility of essential services
  • The development of an Integrated Digital Health Platform to provide remote access to healthcare
  • Implementation of the Dial 100 police emergency response management system, and coordinating citizen services
  • Collaboration with the Government of India on an app for contact tracing and other applications
  • Use of technology to create computational drug discovery models to help find a cure for COVID-19

The Group has been providing cooked food and dry rations to benefit the underprivileged and needy affected by the lockdown. Kitchens set up at 17 AFS locations have distributed cooked food to over two lakh individuals. Additionally, the Group has distributed ration and other essentials to almost 92,000 individuals.

The Group’s other notable efforts include the launching of ALYTE, a free emergency cab service in nine cities, including metros like Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Delhi, by Mahindra Logistics.

As part of efforts to combat COVID-19 through the dissemination of information regarding hygiene and safety practices, the Mahindra Group’s initiatives have reached about five lakh community members.

Bharat Takes The Driverโ€™s Seat

The Farm Equipment Sector (FES) has registered better than expected growth during May despite the immense ongoing challenges. Domestic tractor sales actually grew by 2% to 24,017 units compared to 23,539 units in May last year.

Commenting on the remarkable performance, Hemant Sikka, President - Farm Equipment Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “The timely relaxation of the lockdown for the Agricultural sector helped ensure the speedy recovery of tractor demand during May.

In the near term, farmer sentiment is likely to remain positive due to several developments including robust Rabi crop production, higher procurement, good price realizations and the forecast of a normal monsoon that bodes well for a good Kharif crop. All of this, augurs well for tractor demand going forward.”

Chairman Anand Mahindra tweeted about Mahindra’s May tractor sales numbers saying “Economic recovery will be led by our farmers…’Back to basics’. Meanwhile, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director tweeted, “In the midst of all the gloom and doom in the economy, nice to see that the tractor industry had a small growth this May compared to May last year. May be Bharat will carry India.”

Fast Forward with 5G

Tech Mahindra has announced a strategic partnership with Openet, a leading supplier of digital Business Support System (BSS) solutions, that will leverage 5G and Cloud technologies to accelerate Digital Transformation for CSPs.

“We have always been committed to build a robust set of strategic partners to deliver an enhanced experience to our customers,” said Manish Vyas, President (Communications, Media and Entertainment Business), and CEO, Network Services, Tech Mahindra. “Openet is an important member of our ecosystem, and together, we have already delivered several innovative solutions to the CSPs of the world.”, he continued.

5G is driving CSPs to upgrade their BSS systems. The only way to monetise 5G is to have the ability to charge for 5G services, explains Chantel Gary, who works as senior analyst at Omdia, and has authored a recent report, IT Investment Essentials for 5G Monetisation. However, existing charging systems must be upgraded to 5G-ready convergent charging systems, explains Mr Gary. “Investing in improving the omnichannel customer experience and customer lifecycle, and in incorporating analytics into front-end systems can allow companies to maximise monetisation opportunities.”

It is not only about the ability to capitalise on new digital and 5G opportunities. As John Abraham, a senior analyst at Analysis Mason explains, “Upgrading BSS for digital and 5G services can help drive a lot of redundant costs out of a business.” Approximately 65-70 per cent of global revenue management system spend goes to support and maintain existing systems, says Mr Abraham. The introduction of 5G and the resultant digital transformation presents a critical opportunity for CSPs to cut legacy overheads and costs.

The combination of Tech Mahindra’s transformation services and Openet’s best-in-class BSS capabilities will provide market-leading capabilities that can resolve even the most difficult monetisation, customer experience and commerce challenges that CSPs will encounter as they seek returns from 5G. “As part of our TechMNxt charter, our focus is on providing solutions that enable digital transformation and meet the customers’ evolving needs,” said Vyas. “We’re looking forward to rolling out this strategic partnership on a global basis.”

Niall Norton, CEO, Openet, concurs. “At Openet we made the investment to re-write our software to be cloud-native, open and digital several years ago. With this partnership, Openet and Tech Mahindra will be able to scale our collaboration, adding a few major CSPs to our client list as our solutions produce results that are driving change and growth in the telecoms industry. With this formal collaboration, we intend to add a lot more.”
