Taking the Automotive Industry by Storm

As 2018 winds down and we are on the cusp of a brand new year, Echo takes a look back at a few highlights from the year that was.

Mahindra’s automotive line-up saw three new launches this year and is moving toward the fourth. These new breed of vehicles are products of engineering excellence, built on global platforms.

  • Mahindra Marazzo breaks all records
    The launch of Marazzo became a defining moment in the automotive journey of Mahindra not only in India, but globally as well. Marazzo is Mahindra’s first truly global automotive product, engineered in Detroit and at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), Chennai. The shark-inspired styling of Marazzo created by Pininfarina, Italy and the Mahindra Design Studio in Mumbai laid the groundwork for such global collaborations in the future. Marazzo garnered 10,000+ bookings in just over a month since its launch. With the latest Global NCAP 4-star crash safety rating this year, Mahindra Marazzo also became the safest MPV in India.
  • Luxury SUV Alturas G4 redefining royalty
    Mahindra launched its much-awaited Alturas G4 luxury SUV in November. The Alturas, which is based on the fourth generation Ssangyong Rexton, with its bold and imposing design, thrilling performance and unmatched safety, it is all set to transform the premium SUV segment. It has received very positive reviews from the automotive media and is generating a lot of interest among potential buyers.
  • Jawa Motorcycles
    Stirring up nostalgia, Mahindra subsidiary, Classic Legends re-launched the iconic Jawa motorcycle brand in India after 42 years. The company launched two new models called the ‘Jawa’ and ‘Jawa Forty-Two’ priced at Rs. 1.64 lakh and Rs. 1.55 lakh, respectively, with the custom bobber, the ‘Jawa Perak’ that is going to be launched later priced at Rs. 1.89 lakh. Jawa has received a fantastic response selling out its planned production until September 2019.
  • XUV Three double ‘Oh’
    After the name reveal, Mahindra’s highly anticipated cheetah-inspired SUV - XUV300 is all set to blaze the Indian roads from February 2019. This new model is based on the very popular SsangYong Tivoli model and marks Mahindra’s debut in the fast growing compact SUV segment.


Expanding Geographical Frontiers

Since 1945, Mahindra and Mahindra has been connecting with the world through partnerships with companies across continents, driven by a diverse and multinational workforce. This year too M&M continued to form new alliances and integrate with global communities.

  • Mahindra Group launched Automobili Pininfarina
    Combining Pininfarina's legendary automotive design prowess with Mahindra's growing electric vehicle (EV) expertise, Mahindra and Mahindra launched Automobili Pininfarina, the world’s newest sustainable luxury car brand.
    Automobili Pininfarina opened its new global headquarters in Munich, Germany this year. They also announced high profile additions to their management team and an 80-million-euro Electric Vehicle (EV) technology supply deal, setting the foundation for its future growth.
    The ultra-exclusive, luxury electric hypercar, Battista, by Automobili Pininfarina will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019, with production beginning in 2020.
  • ‘Makers Lab’ in the US and Germany
    To drive co-innovation and digital transformation with customers, partners and academia by leveraging next gen technologies, a research and development centre ‘Makers Lab’ was inaugurated in Munich, Germany and Plano, Dallas, in the US.
  • Mahindra Agri Solutions Ltd joined hands with Sumitomo Corporation Group from Japan
    With an aim to deliver farm tech prosperity; Mahindra Agri Solutions Ltd and Sumitomo Corporation Group are developing the latest technology to reduce crop damage.
  • Mahindra launched vehicle assembly plant in Sri Lanka
    With an aim of exploring opportunities and building powerful synergies in this island nation, Mahindra Group entered into a joint venture with Ideal Motors Ltd., to assemble automotive vehicles in Sri Lanka.
  • Mahindra Automotive North America extended its reach
    Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) continued to empower Detroit residents this year as well. MANA’s involvement got a boost when Mahindra Urban Agriculture Grant Program 2018, in its fourth year, disbursed USD 127,000 in funding and equipment to eight Southeast Michigan nonprofits in Detroit. They also announced a long-reaching agreement to support the efforts of Adventure Vet, an NGO working for war veterans in Moab, Utah.
  • Mahindra Aerospace flying high in Africa
    Mahindra Aerospace has made a mark in Africa with Botswana’s Major Blue Air becoming its first customer for the new Airvan 10. This is Mahindra’s next gen, 10-seater, turbo-prop aircraft that follows the footsteps of Mahindra’s piston-engine, 8-seater, Airvan 8, with operations in 29 countries.
  • Mahindra established local assembly facility in South Africa
    Mahindra South Africa joined the league of South African vehicle manufacturers this year with the opening of a state-of-the-art vehicle assembly facility in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Mahindra Defence partnered with Aeronautics Limited Israel
    Mahindra Defence and Aeronautics of Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding to partner for Naval Shipborne Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Aeronautics and Mahindra will co-develop a UAV system, which can be launched from Indian warships.


Driving Positive Change

Ever since its inception, Mahindra has believed in doing good for the communities in which it operates, a philosophy we call ‘Rise For Good’. This goes beyond philanthropy and CSR, and is more about an attitude, a way of life. The larger goal is to drive positive change for all our stakeholders.

This year too, the Mahindra Group has made a big impact, be it though its commitment to serve the planet or through efforts to enable girl child education. Here are the key highlights from this year.

  • Mahindra Group committed to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2040
    At the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, Mahindra Group made the commitment to go carbon neutral by 2040. With a focus on energy efficiency and the use of renewable power to achieve this target, Mahindra Group is leading the global fight against climate change. This year Mahindra’s Igatpuri manufacturing plant became India’s first Carbon Neutral manufacturing facility.
    M&M is the first Indian company to announce its internal Carbon Price of USD 10 per ton of carbon emitted to fund investments required to pursue the path of carbon neutrality. It has doubled the energy productivity of its automotive business almost 12 years ahead of schedule. M&M is also the first company in the world to sign on to the EP100 program, which is the global, collaborative initiative of influential businesses that pledges to double energy productivity by 2030.
  • Teen Age Girls (TAG) Report
    India got its first official report card on the education, health and empowerment status of teenage girls. About 75,000 young girls from 600 districts across 30 states narrated their stories that were published in the Teen Age Girls (TAG) Report. The survey was compiled by Naandi Foundation and brought together by Project Nanhi Kali with grant support from Mahindra and Mahindra.
    The TAG Report is serving as a roadmap to help policy makers, NGOs and CSR teams of companies to strategize and implement better initiatives.
  • Powering Green Urbanization
    Mahindra Lifespaces and TERI inaugurated a Center of Excellence (CoE) near Delhi to develop solutions to make real estate development more energy efficient. It is the first-of-its-kind CoE that is delivering open-source and science-based solutions to drive green urbanization.
    About 15,000 volunteers came together at Mahindra World City (MWC), Chennai, to plant 1.5 lakh saplings and enhance the city’s Green Cover via an urban forestation drive. Mahindra World City also became India’s first integrated city to introduce eco-friendly, intra-city cycle sharing.

Feathers in the Cap

Through collaborative efforts of the entire Group, Mahindra and Mahindra continued its growth, winning multiple awards on global platforms and making headlines along the way.

  • On the Forbes Digital 100 List, Tech Mahindra ranked 15th and became the highest-ranked non-US company.
  • Among 1,744 listed companies across the Asia-Pacific region, Tech Mahindra is one of seven companies that made it to the Forbes Asia Fab 50 List.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra made it as one of the only two Indian companies on the Fortune Magazine’s ‘Change the World’ global list. Mahindra, placed 23rd, was recognized for its significant 44% reduction in carbon emissions over the past seven years.
  • For the fourth consecutive year, Tech Mahindra was recognized as a leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices 2018 (DJSI).
  • Global 2000: Recognized as one of the World’s Best Employers; M&M ranked among the Top 55 companies globally as per the Forbes study.
  • LadkiHaathSeNikalJaayegi campaign by Mahindra and Project Nanhi Kali won the ‘Best Digital Campaign Award’ at the ‘Laadli Media and Advertising Awards’. Watch the film here
  • Mahindra and Mahindra was awarded the ‘Grand Award – Most Innovative Company’ title at the CII Industrial Innovation Awards.
  • M&M won eight Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) Awards from Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance at Kyoto, Japan, for excellence shown by Automotive and Farm Division.
  • Mahindra Comviva won the Best Innovation Award at the 8th Annual Asia Communication Awards for its payPLUS Unified Payment Acceptance Solution.
  • Mahindra Finance won 3 prestigious awards for excellence in Rural Marketing & Communication at Flame Awards Asia 2018.
  • Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) was awarded the Porter Prize for second time in a row, which was given this year for ‘Creating Distinctive Value’ in the hospitality space.
