In ConversationMahindra Reaffirms ‘Dignity of the Individual’ following Supreme Court Ruling on Section 377

India celebrated following the recent historic Supreme Court ruling that decriminalized Section 377 of the IPC. The court said, “Section 377 of the IPC, in so far as it criminalizes consensual sexual acts between man and man or woman and woman is unconstitutional and struck down.” This is a landmark moment in the fight for equality by the LGBTQ community.

In conversation with Echo, Rajeev Dubey, Group President (HR & Corporate Services) & CEO (After-Market Sector), Member of the Group Executive Board of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, shares his thoughts on the ruling and how it will impact the Group’s existing policies.

Dignity of Every Human Being Restored
“First of all, it is our belief that we should show respect to every individual regardless of their religious, social or sexual orientation. With the LGBTQ ruling by the Supreme Court, we rejoice because it restores the dignity of every human being, regardless of their inclination.

From the point of view of the individual, it gives that person the freedom to be who she or he is, and just that act unleashes a lot of inhibitions that currently constrain the person’s potential, and the unleashing of that potential improves the productivity and innovation of the organization.”

Impact on Mahindra’s Policy
We have a comprehensive policy; it is an equal opportunity policy, which means that we are not going to discriminate against anybody on the basis of either their sexual orientation, or age or gender or nationality or caste and creed. We will be convening a meeting shortly, to discuss the implications of this new judgement by the Supreme Court on our various HR policies.

InnovationTreo Set to Redefine Last Mile Electric Mobility

Mahindra Electric showcased its last mile electric mobility solutions, the new lithium ion battery powered three-wheeler range — Treo and Treo Yaari, at the MOVE 2018 Global Summit organized by NITI Aayog in New Delhi recently.

The Honorable Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi witnessed the launch of these new generation models at the summit. Also present on the occasion were Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group and Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, M&M Ltd.

Dr. Goenka commented, “As pioneers of electric mobility in India, Mahindra has been working towards making the Electric Vehicle (EV) segment accessible for the masses and to facilitate mass transportation. Today, we are delighted to accelerate this large-scale adoption of EVs with the unveiling of Treo, a vehicle we expect to become the default choice for the last mile commute in urban India.”

The Treo electric three-wheeler range requires lower maintenance compared to other battery operated ones. It has features like remote monitoring of mileage, location and battery status through NEMO tech.

Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra Electric, said, “The three-wheeler segment with its sheer size has the potential to make a significant contribution to India’s all-electric mobility vision. The vehicles also give owners and drivers an opportunity to improve their earning potential by 20-25%, which is a very significant margin for them.”

InnovationNew Engineers for a New India

The first batch of 218 engineers have just graduated from the Mahindra École Centrale (MEC) College of Engineering at Tech Mahindra Learning World, Hyderabad.

The MEC aims at creating ‘New Engineers’ -- leaders who accept no limits, entrepreneurs who drive positive change, and innovators who think alternatively to solve today’s problems.

This philosophy is a DNA level fusion of both the École Centrale ethos and the Mahindra Rise philosophy, and fosters the growth of an industry-ready talent pool for the development of next generation technologies.

Felicitating graduates at the convocation ceremony, C.P. Gurnani, MD and CEO, Tech Mahindra & Member of the Executive Committee, said, “The biggest challenge today is the lack of industry relevant skill sets in professionals and the need for young engineering students to change, transform and adapt to the constantly evolving market dynamics. Our main objective is to create a best-in-class platform for industry-academia.”

The Mahindra Group established MEC in collaboration with École Central Paris (now CentraleSuplec), a 180-year-old leading French institution and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad.

MEC's leadership is due to the unparalleled synergy of industry and academia, transcending geography and embracing excellence. Computer science, electrical and electronics, mechanical and civil engineering are part of the curriculum. It is set in a sprawling 130-acre green campus, replete with the latest technology backbone, high-end laboratories, workshops, and recreational areas.

An incubation and entrepreneurship cell is planned for mid-October this year, to encourage entrepreneurship among its students. With the help of Tech Mahindra, the Mahindra École Centrale (MEC) College of Engineering will focus on innovations in the area of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Blockchain.
