Synthesis of Style and Technology at Shanghai Motor Show 2019

Pininfarina is showcasing two stellar new cars at the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show 2019. While the first one is an all-new Karma Pininfarina GT from its partnership with Southern California-based luxury electric automaker Karma Automotive, the second is Grove Hydrogen Automotive's new concept car, powered by Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Both the cars bring together a perfect combination of the best in Italian design and eco-friendly, next-gen technology.

Mahindra -owned Pininfarina had tied up with Karma Automotive in January this year to expand Karma’s design portfolio and customization options. The Karma Pininfarina GT is a two-door luxury electric coupe based

on the 2020 Karma Revero. The Company has worked extensively on the design and styling of the Karma Pininfarina GT, building a new body from the ground up with relaxed shoulders and a softer feature line, equipped with flush door handles to keep body volume to the minimum. If the Karma Pininfarina GT piques the interest of enough enthusiasts, Karma Automotive will introduce a limited run of production vehicles. For now, Karma Automotive is capturing select characteristics of the Karma Pininfarina GT and working them into forthcoming production vehicles.

At the event Pininfarina also pulled the wraps off the concept car from Grove Hydrogen Automotive, the world's first all Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Mass Production Company, According to Grove, fuel cell technology combined with Carbon Fibre and Composite technology allow one to maximize the benefit of having Hydrogen, a lighter than air (oxygen) carrier of energy on board in a lightweight car. These technologies provide a platform for the most technologically advanced vehicle ever seen, presented in a stylish and daring shape.

KUV100 All Set for African Safari

Mahindra recently launched its compact SUV – the KUV100 (pronounced as KUV ‘1 double Oh’), in Djibouti, Africa. The young SUV, appeals to the youth with its aggressive styling, trendy interiors, long features list and attractive price point. The KUV100 is also Djibouti’s most fuel-efficient diesel SUV with a mileage of 25.32kmpl.

Head of International Operations (AFS) - Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said, “The KUV100 marks our entry into the petrol engine segment of the SUV market, and with it, we are targeting a new customer group. It represents Mahindra’s ‘Rise’ philosophy in action, as our development team used alternative thinking and challenged the limits to deliver a vehicle that is poised to be nothing less than a game changer for us. With the KUV100 we are all set to enter a new orbit and hope to deliver a dream SUV to Djibouti.”

The KUV100 has an intimidating sculpted exterior with sharp lines, a prominent hood, and a high beltline. It’s dynamic design featuring large square wheel arches, front-grille with toughened front and rear bumpers, enhances the aggressive design and bold SUV stance. The robust SUV comes forged in ultra-high-strength steel. It offers enhanced safety with a tough monocoque construction, dual airbags, and ABS systems with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) technology for better vehicle control.

Loaded with attitude and user-friendly features, with all the requirements just a touch or a knob away, the KUV100 is as comfortable from the inside as it is capable from the outside. Under the hood, Mahindra KUV100 is powered by the all-new mFALCON petrol and diesel engines. Named after a bird of prey, the mFALCON is a compact lightweight engine built to deliver peppy performance, much like its namesake.

Mahindra Bolero Reaches Another Milestone

Mahindra’s pick-up range reached a new milestone, crossing the 1.5 lakh mark in domestic sales during FY-2019. The Mahindra Bolero Pick up range has sold 1,62,000 units during the year, registering a 9% YoY growth, the highest ever annual sales growth for the range since its launch.

Mahindra has been the market leader in the pick-up segment for over a decade. Today, the pick-up segment has sales of over 14,000 vehicles per month and is growing rapidly. Apart from a pickup portfolio comprising of 4 brands - Bolero Pick Up, Bolero Maxi Truck, Bolero Camper and Imperio, Mahindra also has specialized variants in each range such as the 4WD Pickups, the first Micro Hybrid Pick, CBC Pickups, and customized solutions to meet various needs of the cargo transporters. The Company has regularly introduced new products and technologies, and constantly upgraded its existing products and services to address the evolving customer needs.

Collaborating to Innovate

Tech Mahindra signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Nebraska in Omaha (UNO) College of Information Science and Technology to partner in knowledge enrichment, hiring and industry-faculty collaboration. Through this partnership, Tech Mahindra aims to attract a diverse range of individuals and competencies from the local Omaha, Nebraska area and equip them with digital skills required for working with cyber security, data analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Lakshmanan Chidambaram, President, Americas Strategic Verticals, Tech Mahindra, said, “Our collaboration with the University of Nebraska in Omaha will provide a platform for innovation, arising out of technology research and help in solving real-world business problems by leveraging digital solutions. The students and the faculty will gain access to Tech Mahindra’s expertise in new digital technologies through

regular speaker events, webinars, and hackathons. Tech Mahindra will also work closely with the students and faculty on proof-of-concepts, whitepapers and research projects. Key initiatives of this collaboration will focus on several different elements like partnership on the advisory board, capability development, student capstone projects and internships, publication, product and patent support.

Will Monsoon Play Spoilsport

The EI Niño alert has predicted sea-surface temperatures rising to above normal levels in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Owing to this, certain parts of India might stand witness to erratic weather conditions. While Skymet in its forecast predicted 70% probability of ‘Below Normal Rainfall and 15% chances of drought, IMD’s prediction suggests 49% chance of ‘Below Normal Rainfall’ and 17% chance of drought. Mahindra Group’s Chief Economic Desk analyses these weather trends and the implications it may have on the Indian rural economy.

The agricultural output will be compromised owing to a ‘below-normal monsoon’ and rising temperatures. As per the forecast by Skymet, Karnataka, Vidarbha, South West Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada in Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand, along with the North-Eastern States are likely to get affected due to deficient rainfall. Of these, the latter would face severe water stress due to two consecutive years of drought.

In FY-19, horticulture production is estimated to be 314.5 million tonnes which is 0.95% higher than FY-18 and 8% higher than past 5 years average production. This growth in horticulture output and improvement in the prices of cereals, after a continuous 7-month deflationary phase is set to initiative growth, and positively impact farm revenue. On a positive note, considerable increase in food inflation, clothing and footwear in the urban market was the major driver of growth for retail inflation that touched a 4-month high in the urban market.

In the rural segment, food inflation continued to be at a deflationary level, indicating a positive signal for the farmer’s purchasing power. While the farmers will get the urban market to sell produce that they can purchase at a lower price from rural market. However, with the rising cost of agricultural labor, a push for agriculture credit will be required to improve farm mechanization levels.
