‘Made in Sri Lanka’

The ten-year-old partnership between Mahindra & Mahindra and Ideal Group, Sri Lanka, that has seen more than 75,000 Mahindra vehicles ply on Sri Lankan roads, was strengthened further as the first locally assembled compact SUV - the Mahindra KUV100 rolled out of the island nation’s first passenger car assembly plant in Welipenna, near Colombo.

Christened Mahindra Ideal Lanka Private Limited, the
Rs 90 crore joint venture will manufacture and assemble several passenger vehicles over the next two years and provide employment to more than 200 people. This
10+ acre assembly plant with an installed yearly capacity of up to 5,000 units will also help Mahindra maintain a competitive product pricing in line with their competitors.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, “Sri Lanka is a key strategic market for us and we are now fully equipped to deliver products customized to local needs, on time.

This new assembly plant will not only add to industrial growth in the country but will also generate significant employment opportunities at our plant and supplier’s end.”

The Mahindra Group is also the first automotive company in Sri Lanka to announce a full range upgrade to BS-4 vehicles, as per the latest rules of the Sri Lankan government. These vehicles, apart from being environment-friendly, are more fuel-efficient and deliver superior performance.

The Sri Lanka passenger car market's size is in the range of 32,000-35,000 units per annum, of which new car sales account for only 25 percent. With the Government of Sri Lanka pushing for industrialization, Mahindra Ideal Lanka will strive to work towards making the country an export hub and help realize the Sri Lankan dream of a locally manufactured car competing with international brands.

A Decade of Redefining Responsible Business

  • Paris Agreement - Ever since the historic Paris Climate Change Agreement was signed in 2015 by 197 countries, it became a legally-binding treaty that came into force on November 4, 2016. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, represented the corporate world at the Paris Agreement signing ceremony in 2017, where he called upon corporate leaders to join the Science Based Targets initiative and transition to low-carbon business models of the future.
  • EP 100 Program - Mahindra & Mahindra is the first company in the world to sign for the EP100 program, the global, collaborative initiative of influential businesses that pledge to double their energy productivity by 2030.
  • Carbon Pricing - By committing to invest USD 10 per tonne of carbon emitted into low carbon technologies, Mahindra joined the World Banks's Carbon Pricing Leadership Consortium and became the first company in India to adopt a carbon price.
  • Water Positive Status - While the demand for water keeps growing due to the increasing scale and scope of businesses, Mahindra became water positive as early as FY-14 through its comprehensive 360° water management program - H2Infinity.
  • Energy Efficiency - From having a negligible renewable energy footprint a decade ago, Mahindra & Mahindra today has 16.5 MW of installed renewable energy capacity within the Group. Most of the businesses of the Mahindra Group will be powered by 100% renewable energy by the second half of the century.
  • Project Nanhi Kali - Nanhi Kali provides academic and social support to underprivileged girl children in India so that they can access quality education and don’t drop out of schools. Working with 19 NGO implementation partners to make this change happen, Project Nanhi Kali has adopted more than 3,00,000 girls in the country.
  • Project Hariyali - The Mahindra Group’s tree plantation program called Hariyali, enhances the tree cover of the nation. So far 15 million trees have been planted.

Production Milestone for Bolero
