The Mahindra Group was honored with the #HeForShe award at the prestigious Bloomberg Equality Summit, 2019 for fostering an environment of inclusion and empowerment. C.P. Gurnani, CEO and MD, Tech Mahindra received the award on behalf of the Group.

The United Nations through its UN Women initiative activated the #HeForShe campaign in India at the Bloomberg Equality Summit which was held in Asia for the first time on October 14-15, 2019 in Mumbai. This drive for the advancement of gender parity aims to achieve equality by encouraging both genders to participate as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes.

Moving beyond the universally accepted business case for diversity to create an actionable plan for the advancement of gender equality, the Mahindra Group has always sought the most appropriate people for the job and given them the freedom and opportunity to grow.

Speaking at the Summit that brought together business and government leaders as well as activists to discuss inclusion and diversity, C.P. Gurnani, CEO and MD, Tech Mahindra, said, "Including women in the workplace and educational institutes should be a national agenda. Top executives of Indian companies need to make diversity and inclusion a personal agenda. Most of us realize that if you have diversity at your workplace you have a better balance, better creativity, better innovation and better multitasking capabilities. I'm very clear that for anything which is a change, the only way to drive it is to drive it from the top.”

With women featuring prominently in the Company’s growth journey, 26% of new hires in the Mahindra Group are women. Mahindra Susten trains women in retail solar panel fixing, keeping in mind the fact that women are more likely to be allowed into rural households. Similarly, more than 100 women employees on the shop floor of Mahindra’s automotive manufacturing facilities are at par with their male peers. From second career internships to full-time employment programs, several policies have been modified to help women employees find a balance between work and family.

The Mahindra Group also has in place group and
sector-level Diversity Councils to advocate the relevance of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and inculcate an inclusive working environment. In a culture of inclusive diversity, these councils proactively develop D&I strategies that ensure every employee is treated with respect and dignity, irrespective of their gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or disabilities.

Getting an A(AA) Grade

Over the years, the Mahindra Group has institutionalized the highest standards of corporate governance, setting industry benchmarks. The Group has just won the market’s highest AAA credit rating for its debt, with a ‘Stable Outlook’, for the 6th year in a row.

This coveted rating was awarded by the country’s four leading rating agencies, CARE Ratings, Crisil Limited, ICRA Limited, and India Ratings and Research Private Limited.

M&M’s diversified business portfolio, strong market position in India, robust corporate governance practices and prudent financial management have all contributed to this strong performance.

Making Every Daughter Smile

Two days, eight ace photographers, and the highest-ever funds raised since its inception, the sixth edition of ‘Proud Fathers For Daughters’ held between October 19-20 was bigger than ever before. With a 66% increase in funds from 2018, the proceeds from this event will enable the education of 750 underprivileged girls across India and bring Project Nanhi Kali significantly closer to its #Mission5000 of educating 5,000 Nanhi Kalis through this unique initiative.

Born out of a conversation between Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group and renowned photographer Atul Kasbekar on bringing about an attitudinal shift towards the education and empowerment of the girl child in the country, the ‘Proud Fathers for Daughters’ initiative has helped raise funds to educate 2,500 underprivileged girls since its inception in 2014.

This year, India’s most sought-after photographers, Atul Kasbekar, Colston Julian, Jaideep Oberoi, Prasad Naik, Tarun Vishwa, Tarun Vishwa, Tejal Patni, and Sunhil Sippy devoted their time and talent to capture some very endearing father-daughter moments on camera. In recognition of the converging roles of both the parents in raising a child, the 2019 edition of ‘Proud Fathers For Daughters’ also welcomed mothers for the first time, who got pictures clicked with their daughters.

Project Nanhi Kali will continue the spirit of ‘Proud Fathers for Daughters’ by dedicating a day every month to fathers and daughters. You too, can click a picture and post it online by tagging ‘Nanhi Kali’ to spread awareness about girl child education and help achieve #Mission5000.
