Mahindra and Meru Drive Shared Mobility in India

An increase in population and rapid urbanization is disrupting the mobility space and have emerged as key drivers of the ‘mobility-as-a-service’ market in India. The convenience offered by shared mobility services, coupled with the appeal of saving big on vehicle ownership costs is aiding the proliferation of shared vehicles in the country. According to a recent report by Morgan Stanley, by 2030 the shared kilometers traveled in India are expected to account for 35 percent of the total distance traveled. This is estimated to further increase to 50 percent by 2040.

As part of its efforts to shape this aspect of the Future of Mobility (the other two being Electric Vehicles and autonomous vehicles) Mahindra and Mahindra has acquired a 55 percent equity stake in Meru—the ride-hailing service provider, to accelerate the adoption of shared mobility services.

The Rs 201 crore acquisition will be completed in several stages starting from October 2019. With this takeover, M&M will hold the majority stake in Meru Cabs and will take on the likes of industry behemoths Ola and Uber.

One of the first cab-hailing and radio taxi services in the country, Meru began its operations in 2006 and operates a large fleet spread across major Indian cities. It provides quick cab bookings and services to its customers through its user-friendly website and mobile applications.

As the pioneers of electric vehicles and related technologies in the country, Mahindra and Mahindra have always been at the forefront of leading the change toward smart and sustainable mobility. The Mahindra Group has already partnered with a variety of enterprises globally to offer EV mobility solutions.

With its wide range of electric vehicles for both commercial and personal use, cutting-edge technology, and extensive expertise in every aspect of the automotive industry, M&M is focused on realizing a futuristic automotive industry in India which is at par with the global standards.

The advent of interconnectivity and cutting-edge technology is paving new avenues for the creation of sustainable, intelligent and efficient living. According to a new study conducted by Grand View Research, Inc., the global smart cities market is expected to reach USD 237.6 billion by 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 18.9% from 2019 to 2025.

4.5 Million Reasons to #CelebrateDifferently

Three months ago on World Environment Day, June 5, the Mahindra Group reinforced its long-term commitment toward the environment with the launch of a new citizens’ movement - #CelebrateDifferently. This campaign urged people to celebrate the key milestones and achievements in their lives by planting a tree.

This unique campaign culminated with engagement (likes, shares, and comments on the hashtag - #CelebrateDifferently) from 4.5 million global citizens. Under the Mahindra Hariyali initiative, the Mahindra Group will now plant an equivalent number of trees over the next four years to #RiseAgainstClimateChange.

Ruzbeh Irani, President Group Communications and Ethics & Chief Brand Officer, Mahindra Group, said “The idea behind our citizen movement initiative was to collectively work towards giving back more than we take from our planet. Driven primarily by millennials, our campaign has received an overwhelming response from citizens from all walks of life. Although the campaign has concluded, we sincerely hope that #CelebrateDifferently continues to be a way of life for every citizen from now on."

According to a poll by the Clinton Global Initiative and Microsoft, 76% of millennials are focused on the environment. With millennials as the key catalyst for this initiative, #CelebrateDifferently encouraged citizens to include tree plantation as a part of their key celebrations.

Alternately, individuals who are not able to do so, could simply like, share or comment on Mahindra’s social media handles using #CelebrateDifferently and Mahindra Hariyali would commit to plant a tree on their behalf.

From re-starting a fitness regime, to receiving that increment letter, every joyous moment became a perfect occasion to #RiseForGood. You can do the same and become #1in5million with a simple click!

Trees can be so much more than what they already are. Watch the video to see for yourself.
