These have been testing times. But, they’ve also been times that have restored our faith in humanity. On one hand, we’re seeing a woman brave the risk of exposure to help the elderly with groceries. On the other, a farmer is going beyond his call of duty and using his resources to feed migrants passing through his village.
We salute such #PeopleWhoRise, who go above and beyond in supporting the community at large, and we share their vision. Our own philosophy guides us to go beyond limits, and leave no stone unturned to help our communities and people to rise.
In our efforts to fight the pandemic, we’ve undertaken various initiatives. While fellow citizens worked on an individual level, corporates in the country decided to step up. We had the means to support on a larger scale, so we repurposed our existing facilities as well as innovatively used our equipment.
Support to frontline and medical staff
We have managed to use existing facilities to produce and supply 34,000 litres of disinfectants and sanitisers, and have realigned frugal engineering capabilities to build prototype of low cost ventilators in a short span of 5 days. We’ve seen how it takes only one step to create a wave of kindness. Within the Mahindra Group itself, our businesses started to inspire one another. We joined hands with biomedical engineers to create low-cost ventilators in India as well as the aerosol aspiration box in India and the US.
At the same time, we also produced and delivered 250,000 face shields and 350,000 face masks to frontline staff. All of this was possible, because each person, each employee, decided to devote to the larger cause of working for the community. We’ve been able to serve 1000+ first responders and frontline staff in 9 cities, through Alyte, our emergency cab services. 50 of our resorts across India have been made available as temporary care facilities to the government.
Aid to migrant and daily wage workers
Apart from designing and building equipment to aid frontline medical staff in their efforts, we also helped the communities that were affected by the lockdown – the migrant workers, who had to head back to their homes. We provided meals and ration to more than 210,000 people. With every rising sun, we would find an answer to ‘who else could benefit from our help?’. We created HOPE – a relief fund for Helping Our People during Emergencies. We were successful in crowdsourcing and donating funds to drivers impacted by the lockdown.
Our own employees came forward and provided monetary support through voluntary contributions to the Mahindra Foundation COVID-19 relief fund. And that’s how, supporting the community has become a community effort – it brought us all closer, working together towards one goal.
These are testing times indeed – but on the brighter side, we’ve all come together in solidarity, to give these tough times a tougher fight. Humanity has shone brighter than ever before. And when each of us play our part, we will rise as a country, and triumph in this fight.
