This is a story of a common man who made it his mission to protect our protectors.
Krysyn Rego, an owner of a waste management company and a resident of Bandra, Mumbai is leading an initiative to manufacture low cost face shields to fight COVID-19. For every unit sold he donates one to police stations, hospitals, NGOs and nursing homes.
“I want to provide them with as much safety as I can, because they relentlessly help us every day without a second thought.”, says Krysyn.
Krysyn was inspired by a similar initiative started by his friend in Bangalore. His friend helped him start his venture in Mumbai, but it was the community that helped him make it bigger.
Soon after beginning, his initiative was noticed by others who extended their support. The principal of nearby school-turned-camp for migrant workers contacted him to train some workers to help manufacture the face shields. Krysyn not only trained them, he also compensated them for their work.
“With their support, we went up from 1000 to 5000 shields a day, while it helped them financially as well. It’s humbling to see how this has touched so many lives than what we aimed for.”, says Krysyn
Soon, orders started to increase and Krysyn needed a bigger space to manufacture the shields. A good Samaritan stepped up and offered the use of a wedding hall he owned for no cost. Krysyn calls it the ‘Corona Garden’. So far, they have made more than 15,000 units and they now aim to sell 50,000 while donating another 50,000.
“The appreciation from our warriors is what keeps us going. Soon enough, I wish to build them a full-body protection suit”. He says with great determination.
This pandemic has shown us that it takes a community to help a community but Krysyn, and others like him, teach us that it takes just one person’s courage to start a cycle of kindness and positive action.
