META shines in the virtual space

The Mahindra Group reiterates its commitment to the theatre fraternity in India by holding the META festival online

The lockdowns announced in March 2020 to curb the outbreak of Covid-19 had led to a postponementin the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards festival (META) 2020. Now the Mahindra Group has reiterated its commitment to India’s theatre fraternity by takingthe glitz and glamour of typical META celebrations online – for the first time in its 15-year-history!

In a never-before occurrence in META’s history, the awards jury viewed the plays online to select the winners. The experience signalled new possibilities for theatre in an increasingly digital-only world. The jury included renowned playwright, stage director and filmmaker Mahesh Dattani, acclaimed playwright and novelist MakarandSathe, versatile and veteran actress as well as a teacher of speech and drama Sushma Seth, actor-writer Vinay Pathak who has been actively involved in Indian cinema and theatre for over two decades, and well-known film, television and theatre actor and director Lillete Dubey.

Speaking at the virtual awards ceremony, Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group said, “My congratulations to all the winners and to Barry John whom we honoured with the META Lifetime Achievement Award. I am proud that despite our current difficulties,or perhaps due to it, tonight’s glittering awards ceremony transcends the boundaries of an auditorium and becomes accessible to an audience of thousands, right in their homes. I thank everyone who made this happen – the participating theatre groups, the jury members, and Teamwork Arts, the organisers.”

We congratulate all the awardees at META 2020.
