Profit vs the Environment: A False Dichotomy

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, was part of a panel discussion on ‘Navigating Global Instability through Collaboration’ along with Brian Moynihan, Chairman and CEO, Bank of America and Stephen Schwarzman, Group CEO and Co-Founder, Blackstone Group, at the prestigious Bloomberg Global Business Forum 2019 held on September 26 in New York. The discussion covered geopolitical events, fears of a global recession, and in particular, the sustainability aspect of businesses.

Now in its third year, the Bloomberg Global Business Forum continues to bring together top political, economic, and business leaders to discuss the importance of cooperation, diplomacy and shared responsibility for driving economic prosperity and environmental stability.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said, "I see no inherent contradiction between a profitable business and social development. There is huge potential for a virtuous synergy between the two. Working together on a plan with governments also lending their support, there is so much we can do to impact the problems that our planet faces. We have to ditch the idea of the existence of a dichotomy between profit and the environment. The pursuit of profit and capitalism is, in fact, one of the solutions for climate change."
